Otto Awards

The "Berg Academy" is proud to host the annual Otto Awards to celebrate the film productions of our university.  Each year, students form groups to produce a film with the assistance of the Media Center.  These films revolve around some aspect of life in Freiberg and at our university. Participants of the Film Seminar (Project) module need to prepare a short film, a movie poster, and hold a short presentation on their experiences of making the film. The module awards 3 credits to registered participants.

What initially started as a byproduct of a course has evolved into an exciting spectacle that draws large audiences and evokes public notice.  A jury, meeting in a secret location, awards Ottos in such categories as “Best Actress”, “Best Actor”, “Best Supporting Role”, “Best Production”, “Best Humor”, etc.  The Ottos are then awarded during the public showing of the films in the university’s Alte Mensa on the last Wednesday of the lecture period during the summer semester.  It is at this ceremony that the “Audience Award” is also determined and presented.

Any interested student and/or group of students is welcome to participate. The planning for new films starts already in the Winter Semester. All necessary equipment is provided by the Media Center, and the university’s Computer Center provides the computing power needed to edit the audio and video material.
